FAQ
2
Will it keep my home warm in winter?
Yes. Air source heat pumps are designed to operate during cold weather. They provide steady, consistent warmth rather than the short bursts of very hot water usually produced by a traditional boiler.
3
Are heat pumps expensive?
The cost depends on your property, the equipment selected and whether any radiators, pipework or hot-water equipment need replacing. Eligible government funding can significantly reduce the amount you need to pay.
4
Will it reduce my energy bills?
This depends on your current heating system, energy tariff, insulation and how you use your heating. We will explain the system’s expected performance honestly, but we will never promise a particular saving without assessing your property.
5
Are air source heat pumps noisy?
Modern heat pumps produce some sound from their fan and compressor, but they are designed to operate within specified noise limits. We carefully consider the model and location of the outdoor unit during the survey.
6
How long does installation take?
The timescale depends on your property and the work required. An installation involving new radiators, pipework or a hot-water cylinder will take longer. We will explain the process and expected timescale before work begins.
1
Yes. A correctly designed air source heat pump can provide reliable heating and hot water, even during cold weather. The key is choosing the correct system for your property and its calculated heating requirements.
Do air source heat pumps really work?
7
Will my existing radiators be suitable?
Sometimes they will be. We calculate the heating requirements of each room and check whether the existing radiators can provide enough warmth. Some may be suitable while others may need replacing.
8
Will my existing pipework be suitable?
That depends on its size, condition and layout. Some pipework can be retained, while certain sections may need upgrading to provide the water flow required by the new system.
9
Is every heat-pump system the same?
No. Every system is designed specifically for the home in which it will be installed. We consider the property’s construction, insulation, heat loss, radiators, pipework and household hot-water requirements.
10
Can I choose the heat-pump brand?
We are happy to discuss your preferred manufacturer. However, the final choice must suit your property, available space and calculated heating needs. If your first choice is unsuitable, we will explain why and show you appropriate alternatives.
11
Will I need a new hot-water cylinder?
Most air-to-water heat-pump systems require a suitable hot-water cylinder. We will check whether your existing cylinder is compatible and consider your household’s hot-water needs before recommending a solution.
12
Is my home too old for a heat pump?
Not necessarily. Heat pumps can work successfully in many older properties when the system is assessed and designed correctly. Some homes may benefit from insulation, radiator or pipework improvements.
13
Does my home need perfect insulation?
No, but good insulation reduces unnecessary heat loss and can help your system operate more efficiently. Our survey will identify whether any improvements would be beneficial.
14
Do I need solar panels?
No. A heat pump can operate using electricity from the grid. Solar panels may complement the system by generating some of the electricity used by your home, but they are not essential.
15
Can I receive a government grant?
Many eligible properties can receive support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The standard grant is currently £7,500, with up to £9,000 available for certain qualifying off-gas-grid properties until 31 March 2027. Funding is subject to eligibility and current scheme rules.
16
How do I apply for the grant?
You won’t have to manage the process alone. We will help check your potential eligibility and guide you through each stage. Our MCS-certified partner will submit and manage the application for qualifying installations.
17
Is R&P Renewables MCS certified?
R&P Renewables currently completes qualifying heat-pump installations through an MCS-certified umbrella partner. The partner oversees the relevant certification, consumer-protection and Boiler Upgrade Scheme requirements.
18
What happens during the free survey?
Tony or Darren will look at your existing heating, radiators, pipework, insulation, hot-water needs and possible equipment locations. This helps us establish whether a heat pump may be suitable and what further calculations are required.
19
Will the installation be disruptive?
Any major heating-system change involves some disruption, particularly when radiators, pipework or a cylinder need replacing. We will explain the work beforehand and always aim to keep your property tidy and minimise disruption.
20
Are heat pumps difficult to use?
No. Once set up correctly, everyday operation is usually very simple. During handover, we will explain the controls and settings clearly and make sure you feel comfortable using your new system..
21
Why don’t my radiators feel as hot?
Heat pumps generally circulate water at a lower temperature than traditional boilers. Your radiators may feel cooler, but they provide gentler, more consistent warmth over a longer period. This is completely normal.
22
Do heat pumps need servicing?
Regular servicing helps keep your system operating safely and efficiently and may be required to maintain its warranty. We will explain the manufacturer’s recommended servicing schedule during handover.
23
What happens after installation?
We will test and commission your systems before we explain the controls and handover documents. R&P Renewables will remain available for questions, servicing and ongoing support.
