AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Efficient heating, designed around your home.

Air source heat pumps provide heating and hot water by capturing naturally occurring warmth from the outside air. They can continue collecting this energy even when the weather is cold.

Rather than burning fuel to create heat, the system uses electricity to transfer existing heat into your home. That heat is then distributed through radiators or underfloor heating, with hot water normally stored in a suitable cylinder.

HOW DOES AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP WORK?

It works a little like a refrigerator in reverse. A refrigerator moves heat from inside the appliance to the room; a heat pump collects warmth from outside and transfers it into your home.

COLLECT

The outdoor unit draws in air and captures the thermal energy it contains.

INCREASE

A compressor raises the temperature of that captured energy.

TRANSFER

The heat is transferred into water for your radiators, underfloor heating and hot-water cylinder.

REPEAT

The system continues this cycle to maintain comfortable heating throughout your home.

EFFICIENT BY DESIGN

A heat pump doesn’t simply turn electricity directly into heat. Electricity powers the system that moves warmth from the outside environment into your property.

This allows a correctly designed heat pump to provide several units of heat for each unit of electricity it uses.

You may see this described as its Coefficient of Performance, or COP. For example, a COP of 4 means the system produces approximately four units of heat for every unit of electricity used under the specified conditions.

Actual performance will vary depending on factors including the outside temperature, system design, required water temperature, insulation and how the heating is used.

TECHNICAL PRECISION

Modern technology, carefully selected.

Modern air source heat pumps use a refrigerant within a sealed internal circuit to collect, increase and transfer heat. Two commonly used options are R32 and R290.

R32

R32 is an established refrigerant used in many modern heat pumps. It provides effective heat transfer, dependable performance and good efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions.

R290

R290 is a propane-based refrigerant with a very low environmental impact. It can support higher water temperatures in suitably designed systems, which may make it helpful for certain properties with existing radiators or greater hot-water requirements.

Both technologies are incorporated into purpose-designed equipment with built-in safety measures. The right choice depends on the property, the heating requirements and the manufacturer’s system design—not simply the refrigerant itself.

WHY CORRECT DESIGN MATTERS

The heat pump is only one part of the complete heating system.

For efficient and comfortable performance, the whole property must be considered.

This includes:

• Room-by-room heat-loss calculations
• The size and output of existing radiators
• Pipework and water-flow requirements
• Insulation and building construction
• Household heating and hot-water needs
• The position of the outdoor unit
• Appropriate heat-pump and cylinder sizing
• Controls, commissioning and customer guidance

Installing the largest heat pump available does not necessarily produce the best result. Careful assessment and accurate system design are essential.

WHAT MAY NEED TO CHANGE?

Every property is different. Some homes may only require relatively small alterations, while others could benefit from larger radiators, pipework improvements, insulation measures or a new hot-water cylinder.

We will assess the property properly and explain any recommended work before providing a detailed quotation.

You will understand what is included, why it is needed and how the proposed system has been designed for your home.

COULD A HEAT PUMP WORK FOR YOUR HOME?

You don’t need to understand all the technical details—that is our job.

Tony and Darren will assess your property, talk you through the available options and explain everything clearly, without pressure or confusing jargon.
